the walk home (fall)

Lots of changes around my office. Lots less green and a little more color these days.

The evening after I took this photo there must have been quite a bit of wind. The following morning most of the branches were bare.

You can see a lot further through the woods now with all those nekkid branches.

My camera batteries kept dying on me making photography a little trickier. Also I had a bus to catch that I didn't want to miss.

Otherwise I would have spent a lot more time trying to capture this guy on film.

daily commute

I keep forgetting to mention my commute from work to home. We still have only one car so in the mornings m drops me off on the way to his office. And in the afternoons I take the bus home. The bus stop is about a mile away from my office and getting there is the best part of my day. I work at a 91 acre arboretum and garden so we are sort of out of the ways. Our property has walking paths/trails and since we're adjacent to a nature center, I cut through their trails to get to my bus stop. If I didn't cut through I'd have to walk on a curvy mountain road with no sidewalks and crazy drivers who honk at me. I learned that the hard way.

Here are some photos that I snapped along the way. It was an overcast day and I had trouble keeping my hands steady with mosquitoes buzzing around me.

I loved the colors of this plant (can't remember the name) as the afternoon sun hit it. It's part of our gardens at work.

Picturesque stump complete with mushroom.

The stream that leads to skater pond.

Skater pond. It's lovely even with pond scum covering most of it.

The trickle of a waterfall going from skater pond to the stream.

Why are teeny mushrooms so dang cute?

And why do we call them toadstools? Such an ugly sounding word for such a cute looking thing.

A comparison shot with my boot to give an idea of the size.

Not sure what this was but there were a few of them shooting up through the dry brown leaves in only one area of my walk.

The vernal pools are tricky to shoot. Lots of mosquitoes around them.

This fungus makes me think of frilly trim on a retro tuxedo.

And one of the last things I see before I get to my bus stop is a swan. I thought there was a couple, but I only saw one that day caught in the undignified looking activity of fishing. I think he looks like he's drooling a bit. Undignified.

for lease

I have so much room on my screen with my new apple cinema display, that I think I need to lease out part of it. Even with my browser and design application windows opened waaaay wide, I still have acres and acres of room on my screen. What do I do with all that space??

I am so giddy to finally be rid of this ancient (though faithful) dinosaur.

Apparently, the Och approves of the new screen too.

distracting co-workers

In the worst kind of way.

He has amazing powers the little orange one. He convinces cranky sleepers like the Och (and sometimes me) to suffer him laying on top of our faces.

Nothing short of a crane lift could convince this one off of my lap. Deadlines mean nothing to her.

and the winner is...

Each year my camrades at the saltmines are reminded of the endless possibilities that the holiday season brings. The endless possibility referring to the creativity of gifts that we receive from one vendor in particular.

My buddy beth and I look forward to what amazing (for truly we are amazed) gift our vendor Paul will personally deliver to our offices to see who got the more incredible gift. Last year I won hands down for an amazing lamp that I dare you to try and find out there in retail world (or otherwise).

This year, Paul did not disappoint and beth emailed me a photo of her gift:

Amazing. Right?

Right back at ya, bethy:

And for posterity, last year's lamp (with three different watts that you can change by touch):

why I should quit my day job

Today I received an email from someone at my corporate office telling me that I have been selected as one of three to be featured in the "Getting to Know" portion of our upcoming company newsletter. (Actually she wrote 'Getting to Know' which I must point out, cause I really dislike the girl and it irked me. It irks me now. I could barely type it.)

I was asked to provide my contact info (phone number and email address), my "department" so to speak and number of years I had been with the company. All info that they have access to as m points out. Also they want me to write a brief bit of my personal interests/hobbies.

Realise that this is information for a newsletter that will come out in December that will be dated "Fall/Summer 2007." Realise too that it will just sit in a stack on my reception area coffee table where it will be overlooked by everyone who enters my office and that I will eventually recycle them when I think enough time has passed. And lastly, please note that this will become new chatting fodder for the freaks at the corporate office who now have an opportunity to talk to my husband. Who is less than thrilled at the prospect.

The following discussion between me and m ensued:

J ... how bout this: Jean is an arts and crafts enthusiast. Her husband and cats look forward to the day when she covers her home (and them) with knit-sewn-quilted-screenprinted-bedazzled-doodled cozies. Her crafting exploits and recipes will be revealed in the memoirs which she plans to self-publish after she secures the perfect letterpress on ebay.
M ... no
J ... i had a feeling you would be against it. i'm not going to be able to do this
M ... you sound like a woman who lives in the woods
J ... good
M ... or the house you don't go to on Halloween
J ... perfect!
J ... i'll do it!!
M ... just tell them you like reading and running and the beach
M ... those are the 3 everyone says
J... but i don't like to run
M ... who cares?

Is this obnoxious?

Cause I find us really funny...

A sampling of a typical conversation between me and m:

M: shoot. Just got 2 mtg invites for today.
J: you're so popular
M: Today's Abijit's replacement's first day.
J: how's the new guy?
J: what's his/her name?
M: Fiona. Haven't met her yet. That's one of the meetings.
J: dammit
J: that's one of the names i like
J: if she turns out to be a jerk, you'll hate the name and refuse to name our daughter
M: what are you talking about?
J: and there's no way to un-do this either
M: un-do what?
J: the fiona situation
M: what fiona situation?
J: if she turns out to be a jerk and you hate her, we'll never be able to name our kid fiona
J: just like abijit is out of the running now
M: this could be true
J: if we wanted to name our kid abijit
J: this sucks
M: by that logic, Ocha might be in the running
J: i actually considered that ploy
J: but we are not going to name our kids after our pets
J: or vice versa
J: that's just weird
J: and a little creepy
M: Her name is Fiona Fang. So there's 2 names at risk today.
J: we can't name our kid Fang??
J: you suck
M: She's been in a bunch of calls already. She seems nice.
J: oh well thank goodness
M: I'll ask her.
J: fang is still a possibility

the saltmines

Jenn had posted some photos of her work space which I enjoyed perusing. So I thought: Me too! I want to play! So here are some photos from my work:

This is my office when you walk in (please note that considering my hierarchical status in my large corporation, I have a ridiculously large office. It's a fluke. It bears no weight on my importance at my job.)

This is the view from where I sit left to right. Note the door at the far left, that's where I was standing to take the photo above.

(Note to self: Put those shelves up or away.)

And this is the giant bulletin board behind me filled with useful stuff for my job. With a little fun stuff tucked into the corner. Hard to tell from these photos, but that wall color is best described as periwinkle. It's quite pretty actually, but I have negative associations with it, so I am probably going to have it painted over.

Here's the corner of the reception area desk (looking into our conference room) I just had to photograph this because of the floral arrangement. We have an AWESOME florist. His name is Nelson and his place is called Floral Rush. Every week he delivers some amazing piece of floral art for our lobby downstairs and a beautiful vase for the reception area of my office. Every week we get asked: Who is your florist?? He's got quite the pedigreed client list (Academy Awards receptions, Louis Vuitton, Golden Globe receptions, and yours truly). And on top of that, a sweeter guy you couldn't find to work with. What a consummate professional.

Seriously. My camera is not doing justice to this arrangement. If you could only see the glowing embers of the cockscomb. Pinks and yellows and oranges. It's awesome.

Speaking of awesome, this is my assistant Leigh (pronounced: Lee-ah).

Isn't she a cutie? Today is her birthday. Kiddo is a mere 27. On top of being cute and totally awesome, she's a go-getter. Keeps those shades nearby, hon. Your future is bright indeed.

The prettiest little cake from a bakery in my neighborhood:

The nice gals there helped me concoct a cake that comes closest to a german chocolate cake without nuts (Leigh's allergic) without changing their recipe (a susiecakes policy). Chocolate cake with coconut buttercream. I bought a jar of caramel sauce to dabble on the side.

The serious looking dude back there is Antonio. It's really weird that I caught him looking so straight-faced. Not normal for him. He's a total pal and so fun to work with.

This awesome lady is LaJuana who was really getting into singing Happy Birthday. Yes there was clapping and swaying involved. And an encore.

And there are three other fellows in my office that aren't pictured here cause my camera stinks and the photos were too blurry to bother posting.

hiding out

When jenn and I used to live together we’d sometimes, when we needed to get away from whatever was going on in the living room or kitchen, hang out in the bathroom hiding out from the rest of the world. Probably making fun of b for too much guitar strumming, or one time we holed up in the loo, waving tampons around in the air to dispell the increase in masculinity in our home. Good times, good times. I wish you were were here now jenn, to hide out with me in my office so we could giggle and make fun of the wonder-schlub-assistant. Except it would be the Mean making fun of him instead of the affectionate, though exasperated making fun that we did of b. Just to blow off a little steam.

Weeks like the last one make me wonder what the heck am I doing working in this stupid corporate world? In some ways I feel like there isn’t really any escape. It’s a business model that has been adopted in other areas, government, small and medium sized businesses, hospitals, schools. There’s no escape…

What’s your experience with HR been like? I keep telling m that I want to invite one of his co-workers (HR Relationship Managers) out for drinks and grill her about HR. Ask her why things are done the way they are, if our’s is the only screwy company with the way they handle HR or if it’s a universal flaw of business practice. How come there are people out there who work their butts off, coming into work every day trying really hard to do a good job, do a good job and then fucks like the wonder-schlub-assistant show up, take up space and get to collect a paycheck for our efforts? It just doesn’t make sense.

It’s annoying to be stuck with co-workers who are incompetent and who just plain suck at their jobs. But probably (hopefully) these incompetents want to keep their jobs and put in some sort of effort. If someone’s incompetent, but they care, you can work with them on improvement. People who just don’t care and are incompetent are like poison to your working system.

It’s appalling that a system allows an employee to screw up as royally as the wonder-schlub-assistant has and still feel that they have no grounds for termination. Like how much does a person have to fuck up in order to get fired? Willfully hiding documents, admitting to the fact, execessively using company issued cellphones for personal calls (the average assistant shouldn’t use them for more than 200 minutes a month, he’s been averaging 1000 minutes a month and been warned about it twice), what else?

And I want to ask that HR manager co-worker of m’s. When you get a call from a person who is obviously unreasonable, how seriously do you take what they say? For example, last week the wonder-schlub-assistant called HR to report that he was made uncomfortable in a discussion where I yelled at him and put my hand in his face. True, I lost my cool and my voice was raised to cut him off from interrupting me further. Yelling is subjective (and in this instance totally not true). I’m not even going to comment on the hand in face part of the complaint. He failed to explain that the tension in our discussion came from his increased resistance to perform a task I assigned him. He obviously did not want to work on the project that I was giving him and kept questioning every step of it, trying to connive ways to get out of at least part if not all of it. And now, reasonable or not, I have a note in my file that says that someone complained about the “hostile work environment” (direct quote) that I created.

It’s so infuriating.

I can’t figure out if the company isn’t doing something about it or if someone isn’t doing something about it. I have a feeling that this has been taken up the HR channels and it’s bottlenecked up there somewhere with no end in sight. Or at least in town. I’m hearing rumours about the head of HR being on some 3 week cruise (again) and once that person gets back, this will be addressed. Once that person gets back, gets caught up from being out of the office, revisits all of this, then, THEN this will be addressed. Then again, our HR has a reputation of being reluctant to terminate employees for fear of retaliatory litigation. Somehow, that doesn’t stop them from denying unemployment payouts. Where is the fear of litigation with that?

I’m just talking myself into circles getting more and more mad. I need to stop.

bipolar

Wow. My mood just sky-rocketed up to the stratosphere!

Lemme back it up a bit:

This morning, I was involved in a little car accident. Nothing serious. No one got hurt. Just one of those freak accidents that caused a few scratches to my car and a little dent. Just small enough that the at-fault might scoff the legitimacy of the damage (what I was sweating over). But enough damage to cause me irritation over chasing insurance companies, estimates, paperwork and possibly having to pay for the repairs on damage that was not my fault. Damn freak accidents! Makes me not want to leave my house.

Anyways, so here I was sitting at my desk all gloom and doom. Sighing over all the extra phone calls I would have to make, over my digital camera that sucks so hard and won’t be able to take a decent photograph of the damage, over how horribly unfair my measly little life is. And then my boss tells me that she wants to do my mid-year performance review this morning. Do I have some time for it right now?

I bought myself a little bit of time by going to the restroom and quietly freaking out and trying to convince myself to build up a calm stonewall demeanor. Who cares, right? Who wants this shitty job anyways, right?

I leave the restroom an oasis of calm and head to my boss’s office. We sit for the review behind closed doors.

And you know what? Turns out that she thinks I rock. Well, not in so many words. But she said that overall I “perform effectively” (Don’t you just love the corporate mumbo-jumbo? What a load of crock body of lexicon!) and that there were a few areas where I surprised her and “exceeded expectations.”

Shazam.

And here I was quaking in my Steve Madden sandals worried about how I was going to hold it together if she nailed me for something wrong. All for naught.

I admit that I am not The Model Employee ™. I have really high standards and strong work ethic. Normally. And in a normal work situation, I find ways to fill my down time with productive tasks for my office. Lately? Not so much. I still get my work done. But I am efficient and complete my tasks quickly left with the task of a whole day to fill with busy work so that I appear productive.

I think that the thing that gets to me is how much bullshit these reviews are. It’s a terribly flawed system. On a certain level, I appreciate the touchy-feely desire that a huge corporation adopts to give employees the feeling like the company has a human side. We do care. We want to help you improve. On a different level, I feel like these things are just another heap of paperwork that goes in “your file” in the event that they want to build a case to boot you out. I’m being a touch cynical here. I haven’t really thought about how else these reviews benefit employees so I don’t have any suggestions for solutions or change. But the thing that really chaps my hide is how relative performance reviews can be. In my year and a half with this company I’ve had three performance reviews that look like a cosine curve:

I’ve been putting decreasing amounts of effort and high standards into my work and this is how they perceive me. My first review was with my former manager’s manager who had to give the review since my manager had quit after I was only there for a month. It was a fair review in my opinion. My second review was with a wacko boss who seemed to find every little thing wrong with me. It ended up turning into something bigger and I found out through the course of it that her initial review had been far worse and they had to talk her down into something a little more constructive and a lot less damning. My last review (the one that just took place) is with a manager who is fair. I like her and I respect her. But I can’t help but wonder if some of what she thinks is so amazing about me is in comparison to the last girl who held this post who (from what I hear) fell quite short in performance. Or in corporate-speak: Does not perform effectively and needs improvement.

Not that any of this really matters in the long haul. It’s still a shitty job and I don’t see a future for myself here, right? Right. But it’s good for me to keep in mind how much of a mind-fuck these things can get to be. It’s all about perspective. I can’t let them get to me.

to date

Somehow it has escaped the notice of my co-worker that the tuna-melt sandwich on toasted sourdough bread with a side of french fries that he orders for lunch nearly every day is, in fact, not a healthy lunch choice.

This came up in conversation because we were both agreeing on how tasty Italian sausage is. “But it’s so unhealthy,” he lamented. I comment that it’s funny to hear this coming from a guy who eats a tuna-melt with fries nearly every day at lunch.

But it’s fish. He says.
Mercury. I remind him.
The mercury levels are minimal. He counters.
How about those fries? I ask.
Aren’t they healthy? I thought they were baked. He makes a call to the restaurant and confirms that the fries are indeed fried. He looks a bit morose.

My boss enters the fray by reminding him of the mayonaise that goes in the tuna. And the cheese, I jump in again.

Mayo’s bad for you? He is genuinely surprised. He is thinking this over and remembers something.

Have you guys heard about how those styrofoam containers that your take-out food comes in, it’s bad to put that in the microwave?

I wonder without saying it out loud if perhaps the minimal amounts of mercury in his tuna-melt have something to do with this apparent lack of awareness of the contemporary world. I silently take bets on when he’s going to ask me about that crazy game of six degrees of separation with Kevin Bacon movies. Instead, I just nod.

As for lunch, he has decided to continue ordering the tuna-melt (I always figured I was getting a healthy lunch. I mean, it’s not fast food, right?). He’s going to order something else instead of the fries.

EDITED TO ADD:
I can hear him placing his lunch order now and he’s requested a different side (fresh fruit), and he did ask them to include some tomatos, lettuce…and bacon.

my boss rocks

Can I just take a moment here to talk about my boss?

My boss rocks.
She is the bomb.
She’s got it goin’ on, giiiiiiirl!

Okay, so first of all, she is way laid back. She doesn’t freak out. She doesn’t lose her temper, she is totally reasonable. Wait a minute. Is it totally strange that I am singing the praises of a boss because she is sane? I have been on a long losing streak of bad managers. Let it be known, the dues have been paid and I can now revel in the rewards.

When I first started working for her, she told me that sometimes (cough, cough, all the time) on Fridays, we close the office at 5 instead of 5:30. LOVE IT.

And then every once in a while, like every other week, say…she’ll tell us: let’s leave at 4:45. It’s such a quiet day.

And just now as she left (she works half an hour earlier and leaves half an hour earlier than we do), she told me that since her boss is out of town today, and it’s been so quiet I could leave early too.

Bless you mxxx for your sanity and coolness. May I have many more bosses like you in my professional future.

(takes so little to make me happy, right?)
